By writing your own “emotional insurance” policy for your loved ones, you are providing a most precious gift: love and closure in the event that the unfortunate ever happens. Life is a gift, it’s fleeting and can be taken in a New York minute. Here are some pointers to help you on your way to penning THE LETTER:
First you need to designate a trusted friend or relative to be THE LETTER’s keeper. It’s a big favor to ask and also needs a back up in the unfortunate case where your letter keeper is not able to deliver it to your loved ones: a.k.a. Plan B.
Where to begin you say? Well… your letter may just be for your significant other (SO) or it may be for your SO and your children if you are a parent, or for your entire family.
1. Why not start with what first attracted you to your significant other… details are critical: be specific with mention of setting and everything you can remember from all of your senses as well as where you were in the spectrum of your life.
2. Do you have a secret that you’ve never shared with your SO? I’ve never told you this but…
3. How your SO has impacted your life: made you a better person, brought you joy etc.
4. How your SO makes you FEEL: again, details are crucial here.
5. Give thanks and gratitude section…
6. Recall your fondest memory together.
7. Your legacy…
8. Your special waitstation and promise: what your SO can expect to find you doing when your souls meet again.
FOR YOUR CHILDREN:
1. Express your awe and gratitude for them.
2. Create a profile of who you are and what you stand for.
3. Examples of childhood: things that shaped you.
4. Prioritze life’s most important things.
5. Do these things in memory of me: ask for their commitment.
6. Celebrate life: be happy, be all you can be, take risks.
7. Find your passion, your true self, your talents.
8. Time: cherish every moment.
9. Find love and a life partner.
10. Core principles: honor and integrity.
11. Open your eyes to the world.
12. Highlights from your life’s experiences, and lessons for them to learn from.
13. Always be learning and growing.
14. Your promise: I’ll always be with you, watching over you!
**You needn’t ever tell your loved ones of THE LETTER’s existence, just take comfort in knowing that you have made the biggest investment in love and family while you are full of life and with ample opportunity. Legacy is greater than currency!
